What to Avoid in a New City

There is a lot to love about visiting a new city. Cities have a rich and eclectic history and are full of cultural, historic and contemporary sites you do not want to miss. Unfortunately, there are pitfalls, but finding ways to avoid these pitfalls can greatly enhance the traveling experience for tourists visiting a large city for the first time.

Avoid chain restaurants

There is a chain restaurant on every corner in the city, and in between are some of the best unchained restaurants in the country. These restaurants range in size and style from small intimate coffee shops to large five-star establishments. Whatever your taste and budget, talk to your hotel concierge and find out what the best locally-owned restaurants serve and where they are located.

Avoid muggings

Muggings and pick-pocketing are common in any large city. To avoid getting pick-pocketed or mugged, do what you can to blend in. Dress like a local and stroll casually. Avoid gawking. Pay attention to your surroundings and the people that are surrounding you. Pickpockets and muggers are best at attacking those who seem unaware. Limit the amount of cash you carry, and limit the number of times you pull out your wallet in public. These are opportunities for others to see and seize your personal property.

Avoid driving

Driving is a nightmare. The traffic is terrible, and driving robs you of the opportunity to view the city. Take a taxi or a bus and stare out the windows while you travel; this is your best opportunity to gawk at the landscape without taking risks. The quickest way to travel in the city is the subway, but there is no sightseeing from there.

While in a new city, enjoy the sights that interest you most and avoid the ones that are not up your alley. Regardless of where you go, do what you can to avoid the dangers of traveling in the city and take the time to evaluate the best the city has to offer.
